ESC volunteer Katharina
Labas, hallo (that means labas in german),
My name is Katharina, I am 20 years old and I’m from a small town next to Frankfurt (Main) in Germany. I arrived to Lithuania on November 4th, 2024 and for the next 4 months I will volunteer at Jaunimo laisvalaikio centras. In June 2024 I finished High School. Throughout the summer I travelled a lot in Europe. I went on a bike trip in Denmark and Sweden, hiked in France with three other scouts and I went to London to organize a camp for kids between 12-16 years. Since I wanted to gain some more practical experience in working with kids and young adults, I decided to apply for European Solidarity Corps. I had an online meeting with my project coordinator and shortly after, I left Germany. It was a long travel journey to come all the way to Ukmergė. I’m now living in a flat with two other volunteers who are working at Skautų slėnis. They showed me some parts of the city, including the mound, the river, some stores and other things I need to know living here. November 6th, it was my first day at Jaunimo laisvalaikio centras. We baked some pies’ including two apple pies’ and one cheesecake. Also we had some tea with it. It was wonderful! After, some volunteers and myself made some music together where I played the piano. I had lots of fun!!

Hey there!
Now, I’ve been here for more than a month and I started to bond with all of the volunteers. I’m starting to learn the Lithuanian language by repeating a lot of words people are saying.
We’ve done many adventurous events. We went to the bunker which is located right under JLC. Also, every Wednesday I participate in the volleyball practise as well as the weekly band practise on Mondays.
Furthermore, I painted the wooden bench in the kitchen so it’ll be more longer lasting. When Christmas started to come around, we decorated JLC. We put some colourful bands on the doors, so they’ll look like presents. We sprayed the windows with white colours looking like snow, hung up a lot of fairy lights and a Christmas tree where we normally have the boxing bag. It all looks really beautiful now!
We had a beautiful Christmas concert for everyone who wanted to come. Both of the bands each played two songs including Last Christmas and Jingle Bells. We took some nice pictures and afterwards we had some pizza.

Happy New Year! Welcome back!
The last couple of weeks have been adventurous. In JLC we prepared everything for christmas, we had a german evening and of course we baked some cookies all together. Also, I went to Tallinn for a weekend. For Christmas time I went to Germany to celebrate with my family and friends. I had a lovely time over there. I came back on January 2nd and went directly on a two-day hike organized by skautu slensis. After that, we had a fun photoshooting with some of the volunteers in JLC. Last week five new volunteers including me got „baptized“ as volunteers. That was much fun!!

Sveiki!
Sadly the weather wasn’t that great the last couple of days. Still, I went on a day-trip with some of the volunteers which was really fun. They showed me some nice places I didn’t know before. Also, we watched the movie “Billy Elliot” which I like a lot. There is still band practise on Mondays and volleyball on Wednesdays. I enjoy that a lot. Last week, we had Nacho Night. It was so good! Also, there was the premiere of “Apie ką tau papasakot” of Requiem. It’s great to see the results after weeks of hard work!
